Help Neighbors Stay Safe at Home

Imagine not being able to enter your own home without crawling, or living in a house so unsafe it could collapse. SELF’s Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair program has transformed lives, providing essential home repairs for those in need. We’re calling on you to join us in this vital mission.

At the end of a long workday, Mary sometimes had to crawl on her hands and knees to get back into her home due to inadequate stairs and no handrails to guide her. With the help of a June 2024 volunteer group, SELF built a small deck with sturdy stairs and handrails. Our thoughtful volunteers even took extra time to clean out a garden bed and plant flowers to bring additional joy to Mary and her family.

When Judy had a rotting floor preventing her from receiving a critical new furnace for her home, SELF stepped in to help. Our Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair team was able to replace her floor, a nearly $1,200 project. This made it possible for a partner agency to install a new furnace. Now her home is warm, efficient, and safe.

SELF is honored to help clients like Mary and Judy through our Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair program. Since its launch in 2010, the program has repaired over 1,500 homes in Butler County. Most of the individuals served are senior citizens and people with disabilities who need repairs to be able to live safely and age in place, and they are unable to complete the work on their own. Without SELF, clients might be forced to leave their homes.

Thanks to exceptionally hard-working volunteers throughout the year, SELF is able to address code violations and make necessary repairs to ensure homes are kept in livable condition. Our team can repair gutters, clean up yards, paint interiors and exteriors, complete safety modifications including grab bars, handrails, and wheelchair ramps, and so much more to allow residents to live comfortably and safely in their homes.

At SELF, we believe in the power of community and the importance of lending a helping hand. The need is great in Butler County for home repairs, and we need your help to serve more individuals! Here are two ways you can join us.

Volunteer with us!

  • We need adult volunteers and teens with adult supervision to join our efforts to restore homes for those who need it most.

  • Consider making a recurring monthly gift that will have year-round impact.

Thank you for joining us on this journey! Together, we will go beyond repairing homes- we will rebuild hope in Butler County!

Yours in service,
Jeffrey Diver, SELF Executive Director
